PROGRAMS & INITIATIVES

Racing

NICA started in 2009 with a race series for high school athletes in California. NICA leagues across the country host hundreds of race events each year, creating a place for healthy and supportive competition as where athletes grow and challenge themselves physically and mentally. NICA mountain bike races are some of the best sporting events you’ll ever attend: fun, raucous, and full of positive energy and inspiring efforts. We’re excited to bring these events to Oklahoma!

GRiT (GIRLS RIDING TOGETHER)

Girls Riding Together – is NICA’s focused effort to bring more girls and women into the cycling community to close the opportunity gap for current and future generations. NICA aims to increase female student-athlete and coach participation rates in our programs by 33% by 2023.

Our OK NICA GRiT team includes female leadership and coaches. We’ve seen the success of creating intentionally inclusive team environments for girls on our Tulsa team and beyond!

TTC (Teen Trail Corps)

Oklahoma NICA teams foster personal responsibility and advocacy for the use of trails and wild spaces where we can ride our bikes. NICA’s national Teen Trail Corps program provides student-athletes the opportunity to get involved in trail maintenance efforts and to use their voices to advocate for increased trail access. As users of shared trails, our goal is for OK teams to showcase their commitment as stewards of our trails!

adventure

Adventure rides have become a huge part of the youths’ riding development. During these rides it has great values of time in the saddle, with less formal coaching involved. On Adventure days, students experience new trails, and subconsciously absorb the coaching lessons that have been taught throughout the season. These rides reinforce our core values while building health and strength, learning new skills, and being part of a team of like-minded people through outdoor experiential education.

Physical Literacy Initiative

OK NICA is more than just riding bikes! Adding to the psychosocial benefits of team participation, we are including the Physical Literacy Initiative.

Physical Literacy is the motivation, confidence, and competence to participate in physical activities for life. For NICA, this means adding engaging and age-appropriate activities into practice (for example, into the warm-up) that will develop mobility, stability, coordination, and perceptual-motor skills!

From a physical perspective, these added skills help unlock new capabilities on the bike, with a focus on long-term athlete development. From a mental perspective, these skills help body awareness, giving student-athletes the power to identify what they are feeling in their body, and the confidence to excel in any environment!

The leadership team will help teach these skills to all league coaches and volunteers, and provide templates for how to incorporate Physical Literacy skills into each team’s unique environment.
